Communion Meditation – John 13:5-10 — Feeling Our Own Inadequacy

During the last supper Jesus washed the disciples’ feet.

As Jesus prepared to wash Peter’s feet Peter questioned what is happening. Jesus says that if he does not wash Peter’s feet, Peter will have no part with him. Peter was taken aback.

Peter said, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.”

Peter was feeling needy. He was feeling his own inadequacy.

Jesus replied that only his feet needed to be washed. By Jesus’s action Peter was made clean.

During communion we may sense that the loaf is so tiny and the cup is so small. We may be feeling our own inadequacies.

The same Jesus who reassured Peter of his cleansing is the same Jesus who serves as host at the Lord’s Table. Let us take comfort in knowing that he is able to cleanse us too.
