Communion meditation — I Corinthians 11:25 – Spiritual Alzheimer’s

Do you know anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease?

One of the effects of Alzheimer’s disease is that the short term memory fails.  It cannot connect with the long term memory.   The sufferer misses the memory cues that would allow short and long term memory to connect.

How does that relate to communion?

Isaiah 43:25 says “God remembers your sins no more.”  Call that long term memory.

I Corinthians 11:23 says “Do this in remembrance of me.”  Call that short term memory.

If our spiritual memory is working correctly is should connect our short term memory and God’s long term memory.  Does your short term spiritual memory connect with God’s long term memory?  Or are experiencing a spiritual disconnection when you miss your cue?

Let’s revisit that question: Do you know anyone suffering from spiritual Alzheimer’s disease?

Communion gives us the opportunity to get the memory cues just right.
