Communion Meditation – Luke 24:52

Luke 24:52 says, “Going to Pilate [Joseph] asked for Jesusbody. Then he took it down.”

Just five words.  “Then he took it down.”  That’s all Luke records about the transition from the cross to the grave.

What was a man was now a thing, a lifeless body.  Joseph took it down.

Can you picture it?  One woman said her favorite painting in a traveling art exhibit was the picture of Joseph taking the body of Jesus off the cross.  What a sight that would have been.  He had been exposed to the elements for hours.  His hands and feet were nailed fast to the wooden beams, and they would have to be pried away.  Clots of blood had seeped out of a wound in his side.  The prickly crown of thorns was still attached to his head.

Perhaps I can understand why Luke would want to make such short work of the whole affair.  Recalling the gruesome details seems to weigh upon one’s mind and spirit.

Perhaps we should not dwell on the gory details of how Joseph took Jesus’s body off the cross and prepared it for burial.  On second thought perhaps we should remember .

Isaiah  53:5 says, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.” (NIV)
