Fidelity – 1:2 – We must be assured of the love of God.

Intention – 1:6,8 – Ever have a what-were-you-thinking moment? Israel had that sort of experience.  They turned from God as soon as they returned from captivity.

Rebuke – 1:9, 12 – You wouldn’t treat your governor like that, would you?  Sometimes we need to be reminded that we are treating God unkindly.

Sanctity – 2:16 – When God says God hates divorce, God is reminding us of the sanctity of the home.  Home is to be a sacred place.  Have we made it such.

Tithe – 3:10 – God asks whether they are robbing God.  When I was invited to speak at a financial aid seminar, I listened to the advice the speaker gave to high school students.  It was good advice to ask them to pay themselves first.  However, there was no mention of paying God first.  We need to remember to pay God first.

Exemplary Story: Reread the last verse of the Old Testament, Malachi 4:6. It is a word of grace, and it is a word of warning.  From beginning to end God was willing to extend grace, and from beginning to end we were duly warned that we would suffer the consequences of not honoring God.  Let us receive the grace intended for us.
