Prophetic Voices – Matthew 3:1-6 – John the Baptizer

Judean Wilderness – v. 1 – John set the example.  He went outside the city.  In the first and second century spiritual men and women would go to the desert to seek God.

 

Out – v. 5 – Like some preachers in centuries to come John had mass appeal.   It was said that great multitudes came to hear George Whitfield preach.  So it was with John the Baptizer.

 

Herald – v. 3 – His was a message of readiness.  The people were not ready for their Messiah.  Is it any different today?

Notification – vs. 3, 8 – John put the people on notice.  They were to prepare spiritually.  They were to repent.

 

Baptism – v. 6 – John immersed the penitent in the Jordan.  His action foreshadowed the baptism of the followers of Jesus.

 

Exemplary story:  Perhaps you can recall the person who baptized you.  I am confident John’s disciples could not forget that they were baptized by him.  In John 1:37 we are told two of his disciples left him.  Were they being disloyal? No, they were not disloyal.  Instead they found John’s reason to preach.  They found Jesus.
