Communion Meditation – December, 2013 – Keep the Joy

Joy to the world, the Lord is come.” The words of an old hymn remind us it’s the season of joy. Another chorus announces, “Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel will ransom captive Israel.”

For many of us joy may seem short-lived. Within a few days of the Christmas holiday we will discard mounds of gift wrappings. Then we may feel as if the joy went out with the wrappings.

During the night of his betrayal at the Last Supper Jesus reminds his disciples there is a way to keep joy. Keep the commands of God, and you may keep the joy.

John 15:9-11 says, “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, you shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”

In the heavenly circle of love we may find joy. We are invited into that circle of love, if we keep Jesus’ commandments. As we gather around his table we are reminded of his simple command, “Do this in remembrance of me”.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, grant us the joy of Christmas as we remember you.
