Communion Meditation — Matthew 26:52-53

Communion Meditation – Matthew 26:52-53 – What Could Have Been

Shoulda’- woulda’- coulda. Perhaps we have all had our shoulda’-woulda’-coulda’ moments. On the night of his betrayal Jesus had such a moment.

Matthew 26: 52-53 reads, “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to [Peter], “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angles?”

Often those moments when we recount what we could have done are moments of regret. Less frequently they are moments when we make a declaration of determination.

Here Jesus declares to Peter his determination to go through with the plan. Jesus is determined that he will not stop the proceedings that will lead him to death on a cross.

If he could have, why didn’t Jesus stop it? If Jesus had stopped the proceedings, he knew Peter would have been as lost as he was before the cross. And Jesus knew Peter needed a Savior. Jesus didn’t stop the proceedings for Peter’s sake and for our sake.

An old hymn writer penned these words, “He could have called 10,000 angles, but he died alone for you and me.”
