Week Fourteen — A Week of Appearances Recalled
Sunday, April 5
Luke 24:50, 51 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.
Prayer: O Jesus, from heaven to earth you came, and from earth to heaven you have returned until you take your children home.
Thought for the day: As a songwriter said, it may be morning, it may be noon, it may be evening, or it may be soon. Jesus is coming again.
For the next few days we reflect on the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus.
Monday, April 6
Luke 24:15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.
Prayer: O Lord, may we be prepared for the moments when you would walk beside us.
Thought for the day: The next time you quietly approach a nurse’s station, see how long it takes for someone to notice you.
Tuesday, April 7
Luke 24:36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” [This is the first appearance to the disciples by John’s count.]
Prayer: Jesus, as you gave the reassurance of peace to your disciples may you share that reassurance with us.
Thought for the day: The next time you sense conflict and tension let this blessing rest softly on your lips: Peace.
Wednesday, April 8
John 20:26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
Prayer: Jesus, as you gave the blessing of peace to Thomas in his hours of searching may you give us the blessing of peace also.
Thought for the day: Jesus did not condemn Thomas for his desire to know the truth.
Thursday, April 9
John 21:12,13 Jesus said to them, ‘come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.
Prayer: O God, may the hour arrive when we no longer need to ask who you are.
Thought for the day: Jesus’ dined with his disciples to confirm that he was raised bodily.
Friday, April 10
I Corinthians 15:5 After that [appearance to the twelve], he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.
Prayer: Jesus, we give thanks for the testimony of eye witnesses who could collaborate your resurrection to life.
Thought for the day: During the first century succeeded in denying that Jesus was alive and the tomb was empty.
Saturday, April 11
I Corinthians 15:8 And last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for calling Paul as an apostle to the Gentiles.
Thought for the day: Paul’s call on the road to Damascus was a special revelation to a special man with a special message of grace.
