Week Fifteen — A Verse by Verse Devotional Series

Week Fifteen – The Ascension of Christ

Forty days after the resurrection Jesus ascended into heaven. This week the verse-by-verse reading focuses on the ascension.

Sunday, April 12

Mark 16:19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.

Prayer: Jesus, you came from the Father and returned to the Father. Praise be to God for sending you.

Thought for the day: In Biblical numerology forty days is a sacred time. It was so for Moses, and it was so for Jesus.

Monday, April 13

Luke 24:51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven.

Prayer: Jesus, your final gesture of blessing is a reminder of your loving-kindness to all your children.

Thought for the day: In Jesus’ name give a blessing to someone or some creature today.

Tuesday, April 14

Acts 1:9 After he said this, he was taken up before her very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, though you are hidden from our eyes for a time, let us all who seek you in spirit find you ever present.

Wednesday, April 15

Acts 2:33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

Prayer: Jesus, your word is your bond, and the gift of your Holy Spirit is your promised presence.

Thought for the day: By the power of the Holy Spirit the absent Jesus can be ever present.

Thursday, April 16

Acts 3:21 He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.

Prayer: Lord, may we remain watchful for your promised return.

Thought for the day: There will be a day when the wrong is made right.

Friday, April 17

Ephesians 4:10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens in order to fill the whole universe.

Prayer: Jesus, your life gives us hope.

Thought for the day: The love of Jesus took him to the depths of death, but the love of the Father could never let him go.

Saturday, April 18

Philippians 2:9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name.

Prayer: Jesus, our Jesus, God has made you Lord and Savior.

Thought for the day: In the Eastern church it is a tradition to recite the pilgrim prayer: Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.
