Week Twenty-Five – Verse by Verse Devotional Series – The Prophets: Elijah

This week we take a break from the regular schedule of Minor Prophets to study the life of Elijah in our daily readings. Read the daily verse, and as time permits read the life of Elijah the prophet.
I Kings 17:1 identifies him as Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead.

Sunday, June 21

I Kings 17:13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.
Prayer: Lord, may we find the blessing of giving first place to you.
Thought for the day: Once you begin to name the blessings of God for you, you’ll never run out.

Monday, June 22

I Kings 18:38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
Prayer: God, you are worthy of our worship.
Thought for the day: A law of conservation applies to blessings as it applies to water: Even if water evaporates, it is not lost.

Tuesday, June 23

I Kings 19: 9 Then he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
Prayer: God, you are the God of all who have searched within for answers.
Thought for the day: God will often choose a whisper over a fog horn to speak to us.

Wednesday, June 24

I Kings 21:20 Ahab said to Elijah, “So you have found me, my enemy!” “I have found you,” he answered, “because you have sold yourself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord.”
Prayer: Lord, lead us so we may we be found on the right side of your will.
Thought for the day: God gave Naboth his vineyard.

Thursday, June 25

2 Kings 1:18 So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. The third captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah. “Man of God,” he begged, “please have respect for my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants!”
Prayer: God, let us respect the authority of the word and the messengers whom you choose to bring it.
Thought for the day: As God protected his messenger Elijah God protects his messengers in his own way.

Friday, June 26

2 Kings 2: 11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven I a whirlwind.
Prayer: O God, prepare us for the hour we shall be separated from those whom we have loved.
Thought for the day: God declared Elijah was a keeper. Are you on God’s list of keepers?

Saturday, June 27

2 Chronicles 21:12 Jehoram received a letter from Elijah the prophet, which said, “This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: ‘You have not walked in the ways of your father Jehosaphat or of Asa king of Judah.
Prayer: Lord God, help us to walk in an upright path.
Thought for the day: Letters from God are best left uncensored.
