Week Twenty-Seven – Verse by Verse Devotional Series – The Prophets: Obadiah
This week we study Obadiah, worshiper of Jehovah. His mission was to prophesy against one of the neighbors of Judah, Edom. Edom traced its origin to Esau the brother of Jacob. The time of this prophesy is approximately 587 BC.
Sunday, July 5
Obadiah 3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks and make your home on the heights, you who say to yourself, who can bring me down to the ground?
Prayer: O God, may our pride in position, possession, or political correctness not become our downfall.
Thought for the day: Any one of us can take pride in being a child of God.
Monday, July 6
Obadiah 4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down, declares the Lord.
Prayer: O God, before You we confess that all our achievements are small in your sight.
Thought for the day: Humbling ourselves before God is a choice we can make that allow God to lift us up.
Tuesday, July 7
Obadiah 10 Because of the violence your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever.
Prayer: O God, forgive us when we have wronged kith and kindred.
Thought for the day: Those we love most dearly are those we can wound most deeply.
Wednesday, July 8
Obadiah 12 You should not look down on your brother in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boast so much in the day of their trouble.
Prayer: Jesus, for our brothers and sisters may we find in our hearts the compassion you showed toward us.
Thought for the day: Misfortune comes around as it goes around.
Thursday, July 9
Obadiah 15 The day of the Lord is near for all nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your deeds will return upon your own head.
Prayer: O God, may we be the nation that humbles itself before you and finds your blessing.
Thought for the day: God will still deliver on God’s promises. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Friday, July 10
Obadiah 17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance; it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will possess its inheritance.
Prayer: God, thank you for always making a way for your people
Thought for the day: God always respects and maintains God’s holiness.
Saturday, July 11
Obadiah 21 Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion to govern the mountains of Esau. And the kingdom will be the Lord’s.
Prayer: O God, as it was in the beginning so shall it ever be – You shall reign supreme.
Thought for the day: All people have a place in God’s plan. Reread John 3:16.
