Week Thirty-Five — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — The Prophets: Malachi

Sunday, August 30

Malachi 1:6 A Son honors his father and a servant his master.  If I am a father, where is the honor due me?  If I am a master, where is the respect due me?’ says the Lord Almighty.

Prayer: God, let us give honor to you.

Thought for the day: Marketplace honor is often cheap.

Monday, August 31

Malachi 2:5 My covenant was with [Levi], a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. `

Prayer: God, you are a promise keeper, and you keep your promise to give life and peace.

Thought for the day: Reverence is a condition of the heart and spirit.

Tuesday, September 1

Malachi 2: 13, 14 Another thing you do: You flood the Lord’s altar with tears.  You weep and wail because he no longer pays attention to our offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. You ask, “Why?” It is because the Lord is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.

Prayer: O God, forgive us when we have failed those dearest to us, and help us let love prevail.

Thought for the day: Godly worship is a family affair.

Wednesday, September 2

Malachi 2:17 You have wearied the Lord with your words.  “How have we wearied him?” you ask.  By saying, “all who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them” or “Where is the God of justice?”

Prayer: Lord God Almighty, help us discern justice and uprightness.

Thought for the day: When the bitter tastes sweet, we know we are ill.

Thursday, September 3

Malachi 3:6 I the Lord do not change.  So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for being the merciful God you are.

Thought for the day: It would be a frightful world, if we could not count on some people always being the same.

Friday, September 4

Malachi 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

Prayer: God, you bless us before we give, as we give, and after we give.

Thought for the day: Ninety percent with the blessing of God has more purchasing power that one hundred percent without.

Saturday, September 5

Malachi 4:1 Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace.  All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty.

Prayer: Jesus, by your grace and mercy prepare us for the Day of the Lord.

Thought for the day: Your devotion to God acts like a firefighter’s fire break to separate you from the wrath of God.
