Week Thirty-six — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — The Letters of John

Note: For the next few weeks we will look at the letters of John in our verse by verse series.

Sunday, September 6

I John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of Life.

Prayer:  Jesus, may you be our life-giving word as you have been for generations past.

Thought for the day: Who saw it, the Gospel,  with his own eyes?  John did.

Monday, September 7

I John 1:2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.

Prayer:  God, thank you so much for sharing your life-giving Son, Jesus.

Thought for the day:  Good news shared is good news multiplied.

Tuesday, September 8

I John 1:3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us.  And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

Prayer:  Jesus, thank you for making a place for us in the heavenly circle of love.

Thought for the day: Hate draws circles to keep out others, while love draws circles to take in others.

Wednesday, September 9

I John 1:4 We write this to make our joy complete.

Prayer:  O God, we are so glad that someone found joy in sharing their faith.

Thought for the day:  Sharing is an investment that pays rich dividends in time.

Thursday, September 10

I John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, in him there is no darkness at all.

Prayer: God our Heavenly Father, we give thanks today for your goodness and your love.

Thought for the day:  St. Francis said, “All the darkness of the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”

Friday, September 11

I John 1:6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness; we lie and do not live in the truth.

Prayer: Jesus, we would be pure in thought, word, and deed just to be with you.

Thought for the day:  Fellowship of the spirit is neither achieved by nearness of the body nor broken by the distance of miles.

Saturday, September 12

I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Prayer: Jesus, truly we must say there are times we have failed you, and we ask your mercy.

Thought for the day: Jesus is the one, trusted confessor it is always safe to choose.
