Week Thirty-Seven — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — The letters of John

Sunday, September 13

I John 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the prayers of your Son.

Thought for the day: Someone named Jesus always has us in mind.

Monday, September 14

1 John 2:6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

Prayer: Jesus, give us the strength and the clarity of sight to walk the narrow path of uprightness.

Thought for the day: Safety is often just on the other side of the solid white line.

Tuesday, September 15

I John 2: 9, 10 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.

Prayer: O God, may your light remove the darkness of hatred from our hearts and minds.

Thought for the day: Love for another grows by cultivation, but like poisonous weeds hatred grows by neglect.

Wednesday, September 16

I John 2:15, 16 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world.

Prayer: Jesus, may our hearts be fixed upon you and your heavenly glory.

Thought for the day: The best loved jewelry of silver and gold still tarnishes and wears thin.

Thursday, September 17

I John 2:18 Dear children this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

Prayer: O God, we believe the wait for eternity cannot be as long as it has been.

Thought for the day: Someone said, “You’ll be dead far longer than you will have lived.”

Friday, September 18

I John 2:23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

Prayer: O God, no one but your Son could love as Jesus loved with his very life.

Thought for the day: Confessing Christ is good for the soul.

Saturday, September 19

I John 2:28 And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

Prayer: Jesus, may you find us ready when you return for your own.

Thought for the day: The children most eager to recite their lessons are those whose homework is done.
