Week Thirty-Eight — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — The letters of John: I John 3

Sunday, September 20

I John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Prayer: Jesus, your love for us is extreme.

Thought for the day: While others are calling you this name or that, remember that God’s calling you as God’s child.

Monday, September 21

I John 3:3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.

Prayer: Jesus, just to spend time with you we would be pure.

Thought for the day: Why do people prefer the taste of purified water over distilled water?

Tuesday, September 22

I John 3:6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

Prayer: O God, give us strength to live for you.

Thought for the day: The thought of meeting God is a sobering thought.

Wednesday, September 23

I John 3:10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; neither is anyone who does not love his brother.

Prayer: O Jesus, we thank God you showed us how to do right and to love others.

Thought for the day: No one day sales event coupon is required for loving brothers and sisters in Christ’s name.

Thursday, September 24

I John 3:11, 12 This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another. Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.

Prayer: Jesus, save us from the envy and jealousy that demolish our love for one another.

Thought for the day: If Cain could have given Able the positive affirmation he deserved where would the world be today?

Friday, September 25

I John 3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

Prayer: Jesus, may you forgive our empty promises of love.

Thought for the day: Simple acts of kindness speak poetically.

Saturday, September 26

I John 3:23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.

Prayer: O God, we believe you gave your only begotten Son for the entire world.

Thought for the day: Loving obedience is not moody obedience.
