Week Thirty-Nine – Verse By Verse Devotional Series – Letters of John – I John 4:1-7

Sunday, September 27

I John 4:1 Dear Friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Prayer: O God, as you give us knowledge may you give us also courage to test the spirits.

Thought for the day: Counterfeiters imitate a good thing.

Monday, September 28

I John 4:2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God.

Prayer: Jesus, we acknowledge that you did come in the flesh.

Thought for the day: Incarnation is a foundational doctrine.

Tuesday, September 29

I John 4:3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard in coming and even now is already in the world.

Prayer: Jesus, may you protect us as your sheep in the coral of faith.

Thought for the day: Every generation has had its antichrists.

Wednesday, September 30

I John 4:4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than one who is in the world.

Prayer: Dear God, we give thanks for the protective presence of your Spirit within our lives.

Thought for the day: The perfect guest is one that you never have to evict.

Thursday, October 1

I John 4:5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.

Prayer: Jesus, may we always be prepared to listen to you.

Thought for the day: To listen effectively we must be prepared to hear.

Friday, October 2

I John 4:6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.

Prayer: God, may we hear your calling even if others are deaf to your election.

Thought for the day: Many popularity polls are overrated.

Saturday, October 3

I John 4:7 Dear friends, let us love one another for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

Prayer: Dear Lord, how sweet is your love.

Thought for the day: Love tames savage animals and savage persons.
