Week Forty — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — Letters of John — I John 4

Sunday, October 4

I John 4:10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Prayer: Thanks be to you, O God, who gave your son as a sacrifice for a debt we could not pay. We thank you.

Thought for the day: When was the last time you remember making a sacrifice for the welfare of another?

Monday, October 5

I John 4:13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.

Prayer: Jesus, with your Spirit our lives are abundantly enriched.

Thought for the day: Only one Holy Spirit brings peace within.

Tuesday, October 6

I John 4:16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.

Prayer: Jesus, we would live as you lived in love for one another.

Thought for the day: Even the self-reliant must rely on God’s ordering of the universe in love and not chaos.

Wednesday, Wednesday, October 7

I John 4:17 Love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the Day of Judgment, because in this world we are like him.

Prayer: Jesus, without you the very thought of the Day of Judgment would be overwhelming.

Thought for the day: We give love to complete love.

Thursday, October 8

I John 4:18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The man who fears is not made perfect in love.

Prayer: Jesus, may you lead us to overcome fear with love as you have done.

Thought for the day: If fear is nothing but false evidence appearing real as someone said, then love is true evidence ready to appear.

Friday, October 9

I John 4:19 We love because he first loved us.

Prayer: God, it was you, it was always you; you are the lover of our souls.

Thought for the day: One love story is sure to continue happily ever after.

Saturday, October 10

I John 4:20, 21 If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

Prayer: God, in the strength of your Spirit may we love our brothers and sisters.

Thought for the day: Cain could not live with his brother in love, and he killed him; and afterward Cain could not live with himself in guilt and shame.
