Week Forty-Two – Verse by Verse Devotional Series – Letters of John – I John 5:13-21

Sunday, October 18

I John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Prayer: God, it is good to know we have life in the Son.

Thought for the day: Love letters are revelations.

Monday, October 19

I John 5:14,15 This is the assurance we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that the hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.

Prayer: Lord, may we pray within your will.

Thought for the day: Sometimes it is enough just to be heard, and sometimes being heard is all it takes to get things started.

Tuesday, October 20

I John 5:16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, forgive us our trespasses.

Thought for the day: Asking and finding forgiveness for the forgivable is enough.

Wednesday, October 21

I John 5:17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

Prayer: Jesus, save us from our wrongdoing.

Thought for the day: Conviction begins the path to forgiveness.

Thursday, October 22

I John 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one does not touch him.

Prayer: God, we thank you for the hedge of safety you place around us.

Thought for the day: Shadows shrink as we approach the light.

Friday, October 23

I John 5:20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true – even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

Prayer: Jesus, you have proven true to your word, true to your good character, and true to the saving mission of God.

Thought for the day: True character is consistent character.

Saturday, October 24

I John 5:21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

Prayer: O God, we would worship and serve you alone.

Thought for the day: Some worshipers like some pets tend to resemble their master.

Thought for the day: Cain could not live with his brother in love, and he killed him; and afterward Cain could not live with himself in guilt and shame.
