Week Two — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — Sayings of Jesus in John – John 3:14,15

Historical note: Jesus visited Jerusalem regularly to keep the holy festivals of his faith.  In John 3 Jesus has a nighttime meeting with one of the prominent leaders of the Jews, Nicodemus.  At this clandestine meeting Jesus revealed to Nicodemus that he must be born again. Afterward the Jewish leader never stopped believing in Jesus.

Sunday, January 10

John 3: 14,15 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

Prayer: O Jesus, in our minds and spirits we see you lifted up on the cross of Calvary to save us.

Thought for the Day:  Every day on Jesus’ daily planner included his divine plan: obey the Father and serve others. What’s on your daily planner?

Monday, January 11

Numbers 21: 8,9 The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole, anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole.  Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived.

Prayer: God, we praise you, for you have always been in the business of providing salvation for your people.

Thought for the Day: Bodily cures and spiritual cures both require faith.

Tuesday, January 12

John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.

Prayer: God our Heavenly Father, may we be numbered among those who through the ages have believed in Jesus.

Thought for the Day: Everyone we know as a person and not a thing is one whom we come to accept or reject as is.

Wednesday, January 13

John 3:5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.”

Prayer: Jesus, spiritually to start all over fresh and clean we would be born of the Holy Spirit.

Thought for the Day: When the mother’s water breaks, it’s time to welcome a newcomer to the world.

Thursday, January 14

Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Prayer: Jesus, we would believe and obey your command to enjoy the salvation you promise us.

Thought for the Day:  The actions of obedience are proof of belief, but inaction can dull the most sincere belief.

Friday, January 15

Hebrews 3:18-19 And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest if not to those who disobeyed?  So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.

Prayer: O God, keep unbelief far from us that we may enjoy your promised rest.

Thought for the Day: If heaven was a store, it would never need to shut its doors for lack of customer appeal.

Saturday, January 16

Mark 9:23, 24 “If I can?” said Jesus.  “Everything is possible for him who believes.”  Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

Prayer: O Jesus, when our faith waivers it is our weakness of will, and we pray that you strengthen our faith.

Thought for the Day: Using resistance cords and bands is a great way to tone muscles that would weaken with disuse.
