Week Three – Verse by Verse Devotional Series — January 17 — Sayings of Jesus in John —

Saying of Jesus in John – John 4:14

Historical note: When Jews from Galilee traveled to festivals in Jerusalem they had to travel around Samaria, but when they returned to their northern province they were welcome to go through Samaria. When Jesus encounters the Samaritan woman in John 4, he is returning from Jerusalem to Galilee and traveling through Samaria.

Sunday, January 17

John 4:14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Prayer: O God, quench our deep thirst and longings for you, for life.

Thought for the day: If the adult human body is 57% water, and the infant human body is 78% water, then how much spiritual water does the soul contain?

Monday, January 18

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Prayer: Jesus, may you fulfill your promise in our generation to fill our hunger and thirst for righteousness.

Thought for the day: As Coca cola cannot replace Pepsi, the thirst for blood cannot replace the thirst for righteousness.

Tuesday, January 19

Amos 8:11 The days are coming declares the Sovereign Lord “when I will send a famine through the land – not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.”

Prayer: Dear God, let us not suffer a famine of your holy word.

Thought for the day: If a food desert is an urban area where only convenience stores and fast food restaurants sell food, then what is a spiritual food desert?

Wednesday, January 20

Isaiah 55:1 Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.

Prayer: God, we admire and praise your generosity to satisfy the deep longings of all your creatures.

Thought for the day: If we recited God’s word as often as we sipped water, coffee, or tea, how often would we recite God’s word?

Thursday, January 21

Psalm 63:1 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you, my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry ad weary land where there is not water.

Prayer: O Jesus, we need you so much.

Thought for the day: Without food one could live for about twenty days, but without water one could live only a few days, maybe 4 days.

Friday, January 22

Psalm 23:1,2 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.

Prayer: Jesus, gentle shepherd, guide us to the quite waters and green pastures.

Thought for the day: A good wilderness tracker knows the location of all the major watering holes and plans his travels accordingly.

Saturday, January 23

Revelation 7:16,17 Never again will they hunger, never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd.

Prayer: God, our Heavenly Father, give us strength that may we join the saints one day who enjoy the reward of your presence and everlasting provision.

Thought for the day: Drinking bottled water cannot compare with the experience of drinking cool, free flowing water from an Appalachian mountain spring.
