Adult Bible Study — Sayings of Jesus in John — John 5:24-29

Historical note: After Jesus has healed the man who was crippled on the Sabbath, the Jewish leader confront him. He replies that they should be searching for the Messiah, and he is that Messiah promised in the Old Testament.
Text: John 5: 24-29 I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of go and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the son to have life I himself. and he has give him authority to judge because he is the son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice ad come out– those wo have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.

Heed — v. 24 — To hear is mechanical, but to heed is a matter of the will. We must will that we hear Jesus.
Escape — v. 24 — Those who hear are promised to pass out of death. Who would not want to avoid the coming judgment if they could?
Account — v. 27 — There will be an account given by all humanity for the deeds they have done in the flesh.
Resurrection — v. 25, 28, 29 — The dead will rise from their graves. They cannot escape their past except by finding forgiveness.
Salvation — v. 26 — Eastern religions may promise an escape from the hardships of life, but the only sure escape is to be forgiven in Jesus. We find life in Jesus if we are in him.
Exemplary story: The neighbor reported that he was becoming like his father. In his father’s old age he developed acute selective hearing. When his wife called to ask that he complete any number of chores the father very often failed to hear his wife’s call.
