Week Eight — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — Sayings of Jesus in John — John 11:25

Historical note:  Notice again the number of times that the Gospel of John places Jesus in the vicinity of Jerusalem.  In chapter 11 Jesus goes to the home of Mary and Martha when Lazarus dies, and that is in Bethany just outside of Jerusalem.  In chapter 12 we see Jesus returning to Jerusalem, and this chapter records John’s version of the triumphal entry.  So, chapters 12 to 20 give a detailed account of time spent in Jerusalem during the final week of Jesus’s earthly ministry.

Sunday, February 21

John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?

Prayer:  Jesus, like Martha we hear your promise, and we desire to believe you promise.

Thought for the day:  The farmer who has faith in the seed he has sown has no need to dig into the ground to see what is happening.

Monday, February 22

John 11:16 Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Prayer:  Jesus, for all those days when we do not know where you are leading help us stay on the upright pathway.

Thought for the day:  Psychologist tell us we can act our way into a feeling and a belief.

Tuesday, February 23

John 11:21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “If you had been here, my brother would not have died.  But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

Prayer: God, we confess that in our impatience we often do not admit your time is the right time.

Thought for the day:  God is present in and for all our seasons of absence.

Wednesday, February 24

John 12:23 [Jesus said,] “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed.  But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”

Prayer:  God, we give thanks for the sacrifice of your Son.

Thought for the day:  Edible sprouts such as bean sprouts contain antioxidants like vitamins B, E, C, and A.

Thursday, February 25

John 11:35, 36 Jesus wept.  Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!”

Prayer: Jesus, in our hours of grief and loss may your love comfort us.

Thought for the day:  A songwriter said, “O yes he cares, I know he cares.  His heart is touched by my grief.”

Friday, February 26

Ezekiel 37:4,5 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.”

Prayer:  O God, speak to us today in your life-giving voice.

Thought for the day: The cry of a newborn child is a song of praise.

Saturday, February 27

John 11:43, 44 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud Voice Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave-clothes and let him go.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, speak to us the wonderful words of life.

Thought for the day: Why is it that some folk cannot be at peace with good men like Lazarus, and Abe Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr.?
