Week Twenty — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — Pentecost Sunday — Acts 2: 40, 41

Sunday, May 15

Acts 2: 40, 41 With many other words [Peter] warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Prayer: God, our Heavenly Father, we give thanks for the birth of the church of Jesus.

Thought for the day: Today who sees the fields that are white unto harvest?

Monday, May 16

Acts 1: 7, 8 He said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, in our generation may we continue to experience the renewal of the Spirit in the church.

Thought for the day: Polishing silver is one way to remind ourselves of a value that was already present.

Tuesday, May 17

Acts 2: 32, 33 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we give thanks for the presence of the promised Spirit in the church that is yours.

Thought for the day: Promise keeping is contingent on the character of the promise maker and not necessarily the character of the benefactor.

Wednesday, May 18

Ephesians 5: 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by washing with water through the word.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we give thanks for your sacrificial love for your church.

Thought for the day: What did the husband mean when he said, “When mama’s not happy, nobody is happy?”

Thursday, May 19

Colossians 1:18 And [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are the ruler of the one social body that is everlasting.

Thought for the day: Swarming bees follow the queen.

Friday, May 20

Hebrews 12: 22, 23 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, by your mercy your church members are enrolled in heaven.

Thought for the day: The chorus of an old hymn asks, “In the book of the kingdom is your name written there?”

Saturday, May 21

Matthew 16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

Prayer: Jesus, the rock of our faith is our confession that You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

Thought for the day: All foundations employ the mortar of faith.
