Week Forty-one — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — The Letters of St. Peter — I Peter 3:18-22

Note: Most weeks we follow a verse-by-verse theme.  This week by special request we will follow a verse-by-verse review of a passage.

Sunday, October 9

I Peter 3:18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.  He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit.

Prayer:  Jesus, we give thanks for the sacrifice that sanctified us in the Spirit.

Thought for the day: There is no place like home.

Monday, October 10

I Peter 3:19 through whom also he [Jesus] went and preached to the spirits in prison.

Prayer: Jesus, we marvel at your message of salvation for all and even each of us.

Thought for the day:  Jesus holds open the door for everyone who has been imprisoned in spirit.

Tuesday, October 11

I Peter 3:20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.  In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,

Prayer:  Lord God, even today we thank you for the example of one soul who obeyed in faith.

Thought for the day:  If one can go in faith, then you too can make it two.

Wednesday, October 12

I Peter 3:21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also – not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God.  It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, in our baptismal waters we leave the soil of sin that we might better serve you.

Thought for the day:  A songwriter said, “What can wash away my sins?  Nothing but the blood of Jesus.”

Thursday, October 13

I Peter 3:22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand – with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, we join the throngs of those that submit to you as king forever.

Thought for the day: Migratory birds require no public service announcement to begin their flight south for the winter.

Friday, October 14

Matthew 24:37, 38 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the son of Man.  For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark.

Prayer:  Lord God, may we find the strength today to follow your will and commands as Noah did.

Thought for the day:  The ark like the monastery was designed to keep occupants safe inside and to leave the world outside.

Saturday, October 15

Hebrews 11: 7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family.  By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Prayer:  O Jesus, may we always act in faith though the world around has no faith.

Thought for the day:  The faith of Noah outlasted the days of public ridicule and disbelief.
