Week Forty-two — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — The Letters of St. Peter — I Peter 4: 12, 13

Sunday, October 16

I Peter 4: 12, 13 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

Prayer:  O God, in the midst of trials we find our refuge in you.

Thought for the day: After the flood has crested, calm waters shall come again.

Monday, October 17

Matthew 5: 44, 45 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.  He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, we pray that all those embittered by the woes of life shall know the joy we find in you.

Thought for the day: A prayer for an enemy is a prayer for the salvation of two.

Tuesday, October 18

2 Timothy 2:12 If we endure, we will also reign with him.

Prayer:  Lord, we rely on your strength to carry us through another day.

Thought for the day:  The one who procrastinates has not begun a journey of endurance.

Wednesday, October 19

Philippians 3:10, 11 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, above all other persons you are the person we long to know.

Thought for the day: As we grow in our knowledge of Jesus life we grow in our understanding of God’s will.

Thursday, October 20

Ezekiel 10:19 While I watched, the cherubim spread their wings and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with them.  They stopped at the entrance t the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory of the God of Israel was above them.

Prayer:   Lord God, yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever.

Thought for the day:  Exposure to the glory of God makes a beautiful picture.

Friday, October 21

Jude 24,25 To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy – to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, we humbly ask that you prepare us for presentation before God, the Father.

Thought for the day: Children can stay out of mud puddles on a walk to church.

Saturday, October 22

I Thessalonians 5:23, 24 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.  May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, you who called us, you are the faithful one.

Thought for the day:  The most sanctified cup in the house is not the one gathering dust on the shelf.
