Sunday, January 1
Matthew 9:16,17 No one sews a patch of ushrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, on this New Years’ Day we rejoice in the freshness of life with you.
Thought for the day: Don’t go dumpster diving on New Year’s Day.
Monday, January 2
Psalm 40:3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their truest in the Lord.
Prayer: Almighty God, you give us cause to join the meadowlark and the sparrow in singing your praise.
Thought for the day: When you are so blessed that you make other people anxious, just remember that your blessing is a family affair.
Tuesday, January 3
Isaiah 42:9 See the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.
Prayer: Lord God, for blessings past we give our thanks and for blessing yet to come we give our trust to you.
Thought for the day: Can you say that on any one day of the year past God forgot to give you the blessing of life?
Wednesday, January 4
Ezekiel 11:19 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, for this new year let us be aware of the Spirit you have sent to abide in us.
Thought for the day: Perhaps the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz needed to hear the prophet Ezekiel.
Thursday, January 5
John 13:34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we thank you for showing us how to love each other in word and deed.
Thought for the day: Begin this day to select a family member, a friend, or someone and with kind and loving acts make their day.
Friday, January 6
Galatians 6:15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, as your new creations we lay aside the things that divide and embrace the things that unite.
Thought for the day: The choice to reject someone or to embrace someone may just be another choice to you, but to someone else your choice may be the difference between their joy and sorrow.
Saturday, January 7
Hebrews 9:15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance – now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we give thanks for the new covenant that frees us from our past.
Thought for the day: Why does a calendar go forward and not go in reverse?
