Week Three – Verse by Verse Devotional Series — Words of Jesus in Matthew — Matthew 4:3,4

Sunday, January 15

Matthew 4:3,4 The tempter came to him and said, “if you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Prayer: Lord God, may the sustenance of your word give us the strength to withstand temptation.

Thought for the day: The child of God has no fear of illegitimacy.

Monday, January 16

James 1;13,14 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.

Prayer: Lord God, we gratefully confess you never, no never, lead us astray.

Thought for the day: Marketers’ hot air is best placed in balloons.

Tuesday, January 17

I Peter 5:8,9 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, in our trials we humbly hid ourselves in you.

Though for the day: Proper resistance training can prevent stress induced fractures.

Wednesday, January 18

Hebrews 2:18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, in our hours of trials as we cry out to you we are consoled that you know our suffering.

Thursday, January 19

Hebrews 4:14,15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin.

Prayer: Lord God, thank you for sending the Son to show us temptation is not sin.

Thought for the day: In arm wrestling you lose when you stop resisting.

Friday, January 20

I Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.  But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Prayer: Lord God, may we see in the life of Jesus the holy and upright path for living day by day.

Thought for the day: When roads are under construction a detour may be required to reach your destination.

Saturday, January 21

Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, keep us ever safe in your fellowship of love.

Thought for the day: Wrong directions are easily given but no cause for gratitude.
