Week Twenty-three — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — Jesus’ Promised Spirit — Acts 2: 16, 17

Note: In honor of Pentecost Sunday our devotional readings for the week focus upon the nature of the church.

Sunday, June 4

Acts 2: 16, 17 . . . this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Our sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

Prayer: Lord God, on this Pentecost Sunday, we thank you for the church of the Christ.

Thought for the day: To be owned by the family of God is to know the kinship of the Holy Spirit.

Monday, June 5

John 16: 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may your Spirit guide your church in this, our generation.

Though for the day: When in doubt of the Spirit’s leading, read the owner’s manual, the Bible.

Tuesday, June 6

Ephesians 1:22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, we humbly recognize you as Lord of the church.

Thought for the day: A single head gives single-minded leadership.

Wednesday, June 7

Ephesians 5:25, 26 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.

Prayer:  To God be the glory for the sacrificial love of Christ for the church.

Thought for the day:  The “honey-do” list is sweetly done by those who are in love.

Thursday, June 9

Colossians 1: 17, 18 He is before all thing, and in him all things hold together.  And he is the head of the body, the church, he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Prayer:  Lord God, we gratefully acknowledge your appointment of your Son as head of the church.

Thought for the day: Some broken spirits and some broken relationships respond best to the super glue of Jesus’ love.

Friday, June 10

I Corinthians 1:2, 3 To the church of God in Corinth to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ – their Lord and ours.  Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, may we, your church, fulfill our calling to a holy life in the sanctification of your Spirit.

Thought for the day: While humans can build cathedrals for the centuries, God can restore lives for eternity.

Saturday, June 11

Hebrews 12:22, 23 But you have come to Mount Zion to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly.  To the church of the firstborn whose names are written in heaven.  You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, as firstborn from the dead it is your right to sign us into heaven.

Thought for the day: The vote of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit has qualified Jesus’ disciples as winners in the final round for a place in the book of life.
