Week 1 — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — John’s Gospel — John 1: 33,34

Sunday

John 1: 33, 34 I [John] would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘the man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God.”

Prayer:  Lord God, having heard the testimony of John we do believe that Jesus is the Son of God.

Thought for the day:  Investigations stand or fall with the testimony of one reliable witness

Monday

Exodus 12: 4, 5   If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are.  You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat.  The animals you chose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.

Prayer:  Lord God, thank you for providing Jesus as a spotless sacrifice.

Thought for the day:  At half price some bruised bananas are still no bargain.

Tuesday

Matthew 3:11 I baptize you with water for repentance.  But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry.  He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.  His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, may we be anointed with the Holy Spirit that we may be spared the baptism with fire.

Thought for the day:  Preparation for elevations begins with a spirit of humility.

Wednesday

Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before their shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

Prayer:  Lord God, we humbly give thanks for the Son sacrificed as the unblemished lamb.

Thought for the day:  When God sacrifices, God offers only the best.

Thursday

Acts 19: 4, 5 Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance.  He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”  On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, you are the longed-for fulfillment of prophesy.

Thought for the day:  Why settle for less than the best, if you don’t have to do so?

Friday

Hebrews 9:13-14 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.  How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our conscience form acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, you can cleans our inmost being as none other.

Thought for the day:  Clean is a superlative.

Saturday

I Peter 1: 18, 19 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

Prayer:  Lord God, we are so grateful to be rescued from our empty way of life.

Thought for the day:  Choose carefully how you fill your life.
