Week Fourteen — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — The Gospel of John — John 19: 16, 17

John 19: 17, 18 Carrying his won cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).  Here they crucified him, and with him two others – one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, we offer our humble thanks for the cross you endured to save the world.

Matthew 26:42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, in humility we give our thanks that you choose to fulfill the plan of God to save the world.

Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

Prayer:  O God, in the willing sacrifice of your loving son, Jesus, we find our perfect example of how to humbly do your will.

Deuteronomy 21: 22-23 If a man is guilty of a capital offence is put to death and his body is hug on a tree, you must not leave his body on the tree overnight.  Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s curse.  You must not desecrate the land the Lord your god is giving you as an inheritance.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, to fulfill God’s salvation plan you died on Golgotha between two thieves.

Thought for the day:  Service to God can consecrate even the lowliest of places.

Psalm 22: 17, 18 I can count all my bones; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, for your great endurance you drew on the strength of love.

Prayer: Hatred is a weakness, but love is a strength that can endure.

2 Corinthians 5:21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Prayer:  Lord God, how?  How could you allow Jesus to be sin for us, except for your great love.

Thought for the day:  All that Jesus endured on the cross and all that he endured through his ministry expressed the depth of God’s saving love.

I Peter 1: 18, 19 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as sliver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, if we have any hope of salvation from sin, it is thanks to you.

Thought for the day:  For all who would believe Jesus can become your Passover lamb.
