Week Fifty-one — Verse by Verse Devotional Series — The Ancestry of Jesus — Luke 3: 37,38

Sunday

Luke 3: 37, 38 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel, the son of Kenan, the son of Enosh, the Son of Seth, the son of Adam, the Son of God.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, how humbled we are as we recognize the gift of your presence among us at Christmas.

Thought for the day: In Adam we are all kinsfolk

Monday

Malachi 4:1, 2 Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace.  All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty.  “Not a root or a branch will be left to them.  Bu for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.  And you will go out and leap like calves released for the stall.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, though we say we long for your return, we confess our unreadiness for your return.

Thought for the day: Having endless wrapping paper for presents would not make us ready for Christmas.

Tuesday

Genesis 1: 26, 27 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Prayer:  Lord God, may you enable us to see in our fellow men and women your good Spirit.

Thought for the day: The songwriter said, “The Jesus in me loves the Jesus in you.”

Wednesday

2 Samuel 7:12,13 When your days [David] are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.  He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Prayer:  Lord God, through the centuries you have planned to give us Christ Jesus as king.

Thought for the day:  Some classic designs cannot be improved upon.

Thursday

I Corinthians 15:45 So it is written: “the first man Adam became a living being” the last Adam, a live-giving spirit.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, we confess you are first from the grave to live eternally, and you are the giver of life.

Thought for the day:  To be part of the family of the second Adam, that is, Jesus, is a choice we each must make.

Friday

Romans 8:15, 16 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship.  And by him we cry, “Abba Father.”  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Prayer:  Lord God, with the gift of the Holy Spirit we humbly claim our place as children of God.

Thought for the day:  Jesus sent the Spirit as a comforter.

Saturday

I John 3:1, 2 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!  And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, the very thought that we shall be made like you thrills us.

Thought for the day:  Eternity is a fitting place for the children of God to dwell.
